Having been awarded as one of the Best Places to Work for two years in a row (yay!), Remedy Interactive certainly knows the importance of office culture in building a strong team. And, as a leader, I know the importance of being a strong role model in building and maintaining that positive office culture.

Culture can play as important a role in engaging the employees in safe behaviors when working towards achieving a safe workplace. Read these rules of engagement to get actionable ideas on how managers and supervisors can become role models in creating and participating in a culture of safety. And for further ideas on how to get the employees more involved, check out this article on creating an action based safety committee.

There is nothing to spur an employee toward working safely as entering a workplace where safety truly is job one.

For some (who already operate safely), this may only mean increased awareness. Sometimes it means active disapproval of unsafe behavior from fellow workers and a sudden perception that behavior needs to change.

The Rules of Engagement are a good summation of the perfect situation. However, keep in mind that these must be instilled throughout the chain of command. Without support and buy-in from managers and administration, it is easy for a worker or group of workers to become disheartened, and to give in to prevailing attitudes. One way to assist these workers is to maintain good records and submit reports up the chain of command showing progress.

Best may be an approach that employs both a top down and bootom up approach - perhaps beginning with an upper management pilot project or study.

My current employer has institued a Management Training program that all new managers must attend. During this period, they pick a project and focus on completing it. Then, a report is submitted to upper managment on the results.

A project such as developing a community of safety might be a perfect project for such a study.
